The healthcare industry has never received the desired attention for a long time. And now with the opening up of the insurance sector the industry looks forward to a better deal than what was available earlier. It is seeing a phenomenal transformation. For a majority of the population, it will be a new experience receiving quality healthcare services that have only remained a distant dream.
The total healthcare expenditure in our country is about 6 per cent of GDP which works out to Rs 1235 per head (for 100 crore of our population). The government ( state and centre) spends around Rs 14,000 crore which works out to about Rs 140 per person.
The figures speak for themselves. Consider our vast population and the few public health centres we have. Other than being located faraway, the poor services received, lack of proper infrastructural facilities to take care of serious cases are the major reasons for the sorry state of affairs.
As of now the cost of good healthcare facilities have gone up tremendously and is out of reach of the vast majority. The government, in an attempt to provide healthcare facilities to the poor set up hospitals but lack of enough funds, and proper infrastructural facilities has proved to be a major stumbling block in its success. Today a situation has come wherein good healthcare facilities are available only from the private sector and that too priced highly which are beyond the reach of the middle class too.
With the insurance sector being thrown open, healthcare facilities can be provided to one and all at subsidised rates. Affordable health covers, which will also ensure faster access to medical facilities at the same time doing away with the inordinate delays, bureaucracy etc will pave the way for speedy recovery and many a life can be saved.
Insurers will soon tie up with hospitals to provide the required services and accordingly make it easier for the common man. Besides with several insurers providing such facilities it will bring to the fore healthy competition, improved services - all to benefit the common man.
The day is not far when all you would need to do is flash your card and receive the desired facilities not bothering about the payment factor.
